I have very little to say about this book. I read it for my book club and hated it. The writing was boring, the story line was OVERLY predictable and it seemed like a romance novel gone bad.

I would not recommend it to anyone. Ha!

The Island

Another book about the Cape from Hilderbrand. I think this book was interesting. There were twist and plot changes that I just was not expecting. The author makes you like and hate each of the four main characters during different points through out the book.
Birdie and India are the older set of sisters. Birdie is newly divorced with 2 daughters, Tate and Chess. Tate is a successful single computer programmer and Chess a editor for a food magazine just broke off her engagement. India is now widowed but successful in the art / teaching world. India is finding herself later in life and battling some demons.
The reader finds out many fun family facts and secrets. We learn why all the women decided it was the time to return to the Island after 13 years of not going to their summer home. Of course the book ends with everyone happy and doing better than when the book started
This book, like most of Hilderbrands books are good summer reads.

The Baby Planner

I am going to come right out and say I loved this book! There are a few reasons why including being currently pregnant it made me laugh at some of the stories of Katie's (the main characters) clients.
Katie a child safety advocate finds herself out of a job and falls into being a baby planner by luck and a push from her twin sisters. Katie is married to a man who does not want children but she desperately does.
The story was a bit predictable, but really enjoyable. We learn about Katie and her tactics to have a baby that would leave her husband blindsided, such as pricking condoms with needles. Of course their relationship is not on sturdy ground and Katie is ignoring all those signs.
Katie is a savior to all the women that she works for. She is a friend and go to person for all baby needs. The reader learns a lot about Katie's own family dynamics. I think the book was a perfect chick lit novel. Great for a beach read!

Witches of East End

I had a hard time getting into this book, however in the end I liked it. The book is based around a Mother and her 2 daughters. All of them are witches although not allowed to use their powers. They live in a fictional town on the East End of Long Island. That is what made me pick up the book.
The women, one by one start to use their powers and we are brought into a modern day witch trial. The book was full of romance and mystical tales. We learn that they have a much bigger family then we originally saw in the beginning and why they were not supposed to be using their powers. There are a lot of light hearted and fun moments in the story, but there is a very rich tale of betrayal and love. This book is #1 of a series and I am not sure that I will read the follow ups.
I don't think I would recommend it to anyone unless they were a big fan of science fiction and soft maybe light porn. LOL

Queen of Babble in the Big City

This is the 2nd installment of the Queen of Babble. I read the first book a few months back and liked it for the fluff and chick lit that it was. This book was still chick lit, but a little more 'real'. Real except for the part of living almost rent free in a 5th Avenue apartment with your Prince boyfriend who wants to be a doctor.
Lizzie the main character moved in with her boyfriend Luke and is on the hunt for a job in the retro clothing or wedding gown industry, but for now she is working at a law firm as a receptionist. We learn a lot about Lizzie and her dating life in this book as well as her new discovery of her best friend being Bi.
I liked the book. It was an easy read, some what predictable and a few twist thrown in!

A Summer Affair

This is the 4th book by Hilderbrand that I am reading. As an author I feel like her stories are all the same, BUT I like it! The book takes place in Nantucket as do all the other books I have read by the author.

This book centers around a summer charity event that Claire who in my opinion was whiny and did not deserve the life she had. She was placed on the committee for this event and becomes involved with a married man in their small town. Their affair was made of lust and desire and was bound to come crashing down and ruining lives... but it never does. It just ends

The book is mostly told in Claire's 'voice' but then switches and we read through multiple other people, like Claire's 1st love, her Sister in Law, her lover and other committee members. The book does have some hot and steamy moments but not as good as a summer beach read could be. I did like the book. I think they are perfect for relaxing poolside!

Mommywood

After reading Tori Spellings first book in April 2011 I was excited to read this second one. With out a doubt I can say I enjoyed the Stori Telling more.
In this book we learn about Tori and Dean your average suburban parents... or maybe not. Their family moved to a small block where block party and 4th of July parties are planned and where people don't like big changes in their little close knit block. Tori tries hard to be the best neighbor and mom possible, but like everyone else she makes mistakes and learns lessons.
Tori speaks frequently about her relationship with her mother and her side of the story. I think that I could have done with that. We learned how 'awful' her mother is in the first book. We also read about Tori's loss of her dear Pug Mimi. I admit it, I cried when she wrote about that.
I would still suggest this book. It is interesting with lots of fun parenting / home stories and Hollywood gossip.

Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons

I read this book for my Book Club. I was very skeptical at first and did not think I would like it at all. I had a hard time getting into the book, but then all of a sudden it just picked up!

The book focus is on 5 women who were wives and mothers living on the same street in the 60's. The women decide to start a book club to give them some adult time and female companionship. The author picked moments out of their lives and narrated it through different characters. The book continued on until the late 90's and the readers were able to learn of so many things in these women’s lives. Religion, politics, gay children, abuse, and adoption to name a few.

I loved the book. It gave such insight to the times the women lived in and what true friendship means. Being in a book clubmyself it really touched home with me. I recommend the book for anyone in a book club or adult women of any age!

Bossypants

I am a fan of Tina Fey. I don't watch SNL regularly but I do watch 30 Rock all the time and have seen her in many movies. This book had me laughing out loud multiple times. I found felt almost as if I could hear her narrating the book in my head.
This book touches on most of Tina's life so far. We learn about her awkward stage crew geek days in High School through the time when she becomes part of the Second City Improve Comedy troop. After she was able to land that gig along came SNL. It seems like Tina has had a lot of opportunities that were followed up by hard work.
This book delivers on the comedy, one liners, insight to her cast and crew of 30 Rock and SNL. The book touches on her struggles being a Working Mom. It was a fun read. I think anyone who enjoys her work would like this book.

Little Earthquakes

In this book Weiner looks at 4 married women. All these women have 2 things in common, 1. they are married and 2. they have given birth to a baby. This book bounces back and fourth telling the story of all 4 women.
Lisa (Lia) a Hollywood actress who returns home after her baby dies of SIDS. Lisa left her husband not letting him know where she was going or when / if she was coming back. Lisa is trying to find her way out of depression and learn to live again.
Becky is a plus size chef married to a Doctor. Her mother in law is overbearing and manipulating. Becky struggles with kicking her mother in law out of her life because of her love for her husband.
Ayinde is a TV reporter who marries a Basket Ball player. They move to Philadelphia and he is always on the road... you can guess what happens next. Yup, he cheats and gets someone else pregnant. Ayinde's own mother is more or less un-interested in her child and grandchild. Most of the things she does are just for show.
Kelly thinks her husband is her ticket to a better life. When things don't go as planned she becomes so enraged with her situation and lies to keep face. Kelly struggles going back to work early while her husband stays home and is less than productive.
All in all the book is good. It gives a view on 4 different lives and they come together in an interesting way. I enjoyed the book.

Queen Of The Big Time

From previous blog post you would know that I am a fan of Adriana Trigiani. This book I picked up almost 7 months ago and never read it. I read it and liked it. It is not a favorite by this author but it is a good read.

Like other books by Trigiani, Queen Of the Big Time follows a young Nella through out her life. We learn from early on Nella has big goals to finish High School and become a School Teacher. But life has other plans. Nella faces struggles with her family and friends, death and hardships and of course love. She has to work instead of going to High School, she falls in love twice in her life time and becomes a business owner and a mother.

The book ends with Nella's death and all things resolved in her life. It is an open ended story for me that shows that life just continues on. The book is a beautifully written and flows nicely even though it skips over many years at a time.

L.A. Candy

I am going to come right out and call this a new guilty pleasure. I did not expect to like it. I was interested in what it was about and picked it up at a garage sale for $1. This book is listed as Young Adult reading was a fast read. I found the book to be a bit slow at the start and then it picked up.
Being that I watched the author original 'reality' show Laguna Beach and some of the spin off The Hills I wondered how much of what was written about instant stardom was real or not. I found the use of the word "sweetie" to be over used. I cringed reading it so many times. The book follows Jane and Scarlett, new to LA and picked to be on a reality series with 2 other girls. Jane is made to seem like a saint through out the book, and it makes me wonder is this how the author sees herself? Scarlett on the other hand seems to have a good head on her shoulders and was not in this book enough in my opinion. Right away there is back stabbing, plotting and romance. The book ends on a cliff hanger and in my opinion it was a fun read. I plan on reading the next two books.

Julie & Julia

This book was a disappointment for me. I found it to be repetitive and felt embarrassed for the writer. Who admits to maggots in their apartment?!? Or that they served food that fell in a New York Street?
The reason I read the book was because I liked the movie. I like cooking and cooking shows. The idea of making all of the 524 recipes in Mastering The Art Of French Cooking sounds interesting. Each recipe that was described was drawn out and full of anguish. To me it sounded like she rather not be doing to project. She wouldn't quit because of the blog readers who cheered her on.
Julie herself I found annoying. She stated how much she loathe her job and apartment. She was jealous of the lives of some of her friends and family. Julie wants a baby but doesn't know if she can have one, Eric does not want a baby. So, whats is a girl to do? Get a project and that is what the Julie & Julia Project is; an attempt to get Julies head off her job and biological clock that is ticking away. I was worried that the book was going to end in a divorce being that Julie and Eric (Powell's husband) seemed to have a really rocky - sex less marriage. But nope they made it thru - for now.
There is a second book by Powell called Cleaving. I was interested in that book but I am not so sure that I will be reading it any time soon. From what I read Cleaving is has focus on the affairs of both Eric and Julie after the J&J project and their attempt to save their marriage.
I thought I would be recommending this book to all "foodies", but it just did not do it for me.

Room

Heads up: This review is going to be full of spoilers!

Room is written from the point of view of a 5 year old. As most 5 yr olds are sheltered, Jack has only lived in a 12x12 room for his entire life. There is no outside world except thru the TV. He was told that everything on the TV is made up and knows no better. Jack's mother is only know through the book as "Ma". We know there has to be reasons that they live in this small space and why there is delieveries from an older man named Old Nick.
Room was hard to understand at first. The reader has to understand what Jack means when he describes objects and events. He sees things as Ma has taught him and has had no exposure to other people. He even stays in the wardrobe when Old Nick comes in to Room. Ma plays games and tries to occupy their time so that he will be an smart young man. She tries to keep her mind busy to pass the time. She does the best that she can do with the little that they have.
When they do leave Room and head out into the real world the book really picked up for me. I read most of that with in one sitting. It was interesting to see them (especially Jack) adapt and learn what the world is like. There are many family members and doctors introduced into Jack's life. He has trouble understanding how big the world is and how things work. He doesn't understand why it can not just be him and Ma all the time and has severe detachment issues. We do see Jack take some small steps into a new life but not everything always goes as planned.
I really suggest this book to anyone. It is an interesting read and hard to read at some points.

Something Blue

After reading Something Borrowed I went into it knowing that I might not like the book being that it focuses on Darcy. I was "Team Rachel" from the start. I thought it was great that Darcy was finally getting what she deserved. People turning away from her and a chance for her to see what she had.
Ethan, Darcy and Rachel's childhood friend takes in Darcy the mom to be. Ethan is quick to set her straight and point out her faults. But at the same time like any good chick lit there is a twist and sparks fly.
I found this book interesting. I liked reading how Darcy's pregnancy was coming together and seeing how reluctant she was in the situation. The Author showed a lot of character development and great writing. I would suggest reading this book especially if you read Something Borrowed. There is a quick recap in the beginning of the book if you didn't read the SB. It is a fun read and I am really hopping that the powers that be in Hollywood make this one into a movie too!

As a non pregnant woman I have to say I liked this book! What a fun and quick read. McCarthy is a actress, tv host and advocate for Autism. She is not the best writter but it was an entertaining read.
This book is labled as The Naked Truth About Pregnancy and Childbirth and it was very 'honest'. McCarthy can be crude and a bit over the top with some of her descriptions but it was funny and made me want to read more. The only thing about the book I did not like was the legnth, I wish it was longer!

The Tenth Circle

There is a theme that I see in Picoult books: A family that seems normal but has hidden flaws that surface in times of trouble. In this book the Stone Family is facing their daughters secrets she is not the 14 year old that they thought and she is a Rape survivor. Or is she? Was she actually raped or just lied?
Picoult does a great job in her writing explaining different jobs, cultures and situations. There is a back story of Daniel Stone (father in the book) that leads us to believe that he is not the loving father we suspect. But also Laura, his wife shows us that everyone has something to hide. In all the reader see a sad tale of a young woman who has gotten off track and is having a hard time growing up. We learn of adults who ignore clues and situations they see and teenagers who are cruel and unforgiving.
I liked the book. I found it to be a bit over worded in some areas but interesting. It shines a light on to a awful situation and dives deeper into the ways that humans release their pain and suffering.

Something Borrowed

What would you do if you were in Rachel's shoes? That is the question that this book makes you ask yourself. This is chick lit at it's best. The characters and plot are very predictable. You know what is going to happen but the well written tale by Giffin is what makes the book fantastic.
Darcy is the wild child and gets her way, Rachel is the good girl who follows the rules and works hard. So why are they friends? That question is haunting Rachel and she finds herself betraying her Best Friend by sleeping with her fiancee.
I read this book in 2008 and did not retain most of it. I re-read it before the movie drops this coming weekend and was SO happy that I did. I loved this book. I tore thru it finding quotes and passages that spoke to me. There is a lot of history of the girls friendship woven in this book. It brings you back to the 5th grade. I would suggest this book for the people out there who like a real chick lit, who don't mind figuring out the plot and say read it before you see the movie!

Black Heels to Tractor Wheels

I have to preface this review by saying that I am a fan of Ree and her blog at The Pioneer Woman. I think she is funny and someone I would want to be friends with. That being said I liked this book. This is a whimsical story of how Ree and her husband (known as the Marlboro Man) met and began their family.

The author is a city girl (Black Heels) and falls for the Rancher (tractor wheels). The writing is good. It is not thing superb or overly technical. It is a quick and fun read.

Through out the book there is tales of Ranch life mishaps, family history and love. Ree explains in detail how and why she fell in love with the Marlboro Man. The book is light hearted until you reach the last few chapters where you find sorrow and hard times. Still Ree puts a spin on these tales that make you know, they do not last forever.

This is a fun book. It is not a serious read and should be looked at as light hearted romance novel. Every girl wants to be swept off her feet and Ree was lucky enough to find the man to do it. I would suggest it for a light read. Perfect for a vacation or sitting on a front porch with an iced tea!

Stori Telling

As a fan of 90210 I thought about reading Tori's book for a while. She was never my favorite character on the show and I couldn't name anything else she had been in other than Troop Beverly Hills. (Anyone remember that movie?) I picked it up at the library and decided that I was going to give it a shot.
With in the first chapter I was hooked. This book is funny! Tori's life has always been documented in the tabloids and Entertainment News shows. I have had envy for the Manor that she lived in and wondered what it was like to have 'that much money'. This book summed it up for me- it was her parents money, she saw little of it and she had a hard relationship with her mother.
Tori talks about the life she lead and people in her life. There is her first (and second) husband, her Nanny, immediate family, 90210 co-stars, bad boyfriends and friends. Tori takes the blame and admits where she made mistakes and seems to lay it all out on the table.
I really liked this book. It was funny, interesting and a quick read. I am going to definitely be reading her follow up books.

Believe it, Be it

I am a big fan of the TV show The Biggest Loser. I did not watch all of the season that featured Ali the author. I have seen her in person and loved her spunk.
Ali and her mother were part of the Biggest Losers (BL) cast of 2008. She was sent home, but in a BL twist of fate she lost the most during her stint at home and came back. Ali went on to win the season and was the first female BL.
Ali starts and finishes this book with her struggle. Ali realizes that she was not at her highest weight because she just ate bad food, but because she had her own inner struggle. I love that Ali speaks from the heart in all that she does. Believe it, Be it touches on weight loss and dealing with inner battles and is not a "how to" for weight loss. There are plenty of tips and ideas for living and learning to be a healthier person. Ali believes in finding the inner you and not letting it hid behind barriers of fat.
I liked this book. I do not believe it is something I would recommend for anyone. BL fans and people on a weight loss journey would enjoy it. It is overall a self help book and a guideline for healthier living.

The Art Of Racing In The Rain

This was a Book Club pick. I have seen this at book stores before but never picked it up. I wish I would have read this book sooner. It is a fantastic read for anyone who has a pet!

Being a dog lover and having a dog all of my life this book hit home with the idea of, “What are they thinking?" I loved the way that Stein told the story through Enzo's (the family dog) perspective. This was not a happy story. It starts on the last day of Enzo's life and is a look back on what happened in his 11 years.

Denny, Enzo's master is what the book focused on. We learn about the relationship between Master and pet and what a man with a family can endure. But the reader also learns the daily activities and desires of Man's Best Friend.

I cried a few times, felt anger and happiness. What more can you ask for from a book? This was a great read.

Are You There, Vodka?

I really enjoyed this book. After reading Handler's collection of One Night Stands I was not too sure I would enjoy another book by her. But, this one proved me wrong.
The still of writing was witty and humorous. This book was over the top in parts but funny none the less. Chelsea brings the raunch but used it playfully. I could not help but laugh at Handlers description of a midget by calling her a "nugget". I loved the talk about her friends and family.
This book is a fun read but not for the prude. Her comedy is raunchy but kept me laughing out loud. Great read!

Don't Sing at the Table...

This was Trigiani's first book of Nonfiction. I have read many other books by this author and have loved her writing style. I was hoping that some of the same storytelling would shine through in this book, and I was not disappointed.
Trigiani wrote this book in homage to her Grandmothers and the lessons that she learned through her family. We learn about two women who are alike in many ways yet lived different lives and helped shaped the authors life. As a person who is very close to my grandparents I found this book to be well written and interesting. In some ways I think this book could be defined as a "how to" for women. There is emphasis on manners, entertaining and being a strong independent loving woman. All things that shine through in the fiction works for Trigiani.
I liked this book. It was something unexpected from one of my favorite authors.

Lizzie is a girl who just doesn't know how to keep quiet or mind her own business. Lizzie loves fashion and loves the idea of being in love.
This book is pure chick lit. It is mindless fluff that will keep you turning the page but at the same time anticipating what is coming next. The book is centered on a trip in Europe visiting 2 countries in and out of love. Lizzie finds her way from London to Paris and meets a stranger from America on the train. They travel and talk and wind up going to the same location! (surprise surprise!)
I found the characters interesting and the description of the vintage clothes and wine beautiful.The book for the most part is centered around events leading to a wedding at a Parisian winery.
I enjoyed this book. It was a fast read and was entertaining. Great for a quick read and for getting away from heavier subjects.

Dead to the World

This is the book 4 in the Sookie Stackhouse series or for those who watch the HBO "True Blood". If you are reading the series you know that these books are nothing more than a guilty pleasure. However, having Eric be the main star of this book and Bill out of the book from the first chapter made me LOVE this book!
I think that the books are getting better and better. This book brought the reader into the world of witches and other shape-shifters. This book was a really good read. There are some great romance scenes with Sookie and Eric and Alcide my favorite werewolf was around too! Great read and I am looking forward to the next one!

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

After being a fan of the Twilight saga I had to read this spin off book. Bree was a character briefly mentioned in a fight scene. The readers know her fate and why she is killed. However, we never know where she came from or why she was a part of another Vampire coven.
Bree is a young vampire, at 3 months old. She would have been a 16 year old girl who was making poor choices in her life. She was changed to a vampire un-willingly and was just getting into the 'grove' of being a vamp. Bree was part of a coven that she didn't trust and ultimately wanted out of.
I enjoyed the writing style of this book. It still had Meyers signature in the wording yet it was such a jump from the pouting Bella and Edward story. This was a short and good read. I would suggest it to anyone who has read the Twilight Saga.

Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban

Being that there are so many books in the HP series, I am going to keep the reviews on them short.

This book was great! Compared to the previous 2 books that I read in the series I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. There were more twist and turns in Harry's life. We got to meet more people in his life and see some friendships develop. Although the book is geared to Young Adults, I found them to be a quick read and entertaining. The series is worth reading so far and I plan on continuing on.

The Secret Life of Cee Cee Wilkes

This book was a pick from my Book Club. I have never heard of Chamberlain before but she has it written over 15 books. This book was a fast read. The story of Cee Cee was beautifully written and interesting.
In the beginning of the book I was not sure that I would enjoy the story. The beginning plot seemed overly explained and there was so much detail that I felt as if I knew every thing about the character and would not learn more. I was wrong. By the middle of the book I found my self thinking of what was going on with the characters when I was not reading the story. I was putting myself in the main characters and secondary characters shoes.
Chamberlain raises a lot of questions on the right way to "parent" and raise a child? What do you do when the truth is unfolding in front of your eyes? Also who are you when you have no family? I think this is a great book and a good read for just about any woman. The book raised a lot of great discussion questions for the book club and I find myself recommending it to others.

My Horizontal Life

This was the first book I have read by Chelsea Handler. It is called "A collection of One Night Stands" but in reality it is a book about life experiences and also the pursuit of sex. I found the book to be entertaining and found my self laughing out loud at some points.

I am semi familiar with Handler. I have never watched her TV show but have seen her on other programs and award shows. I found the style of writing good. It flowed nicely and was easy to read. Some of the stories seem far fetched, but funny! I think there are many awkward stories out there and this hit on all different types of them. Along with getting to know her awkward family.

This book is a good light read and still interesting. I would suggest it for a good laugh or a summer beach read.

After seeing post about this book on a Facebook status, I wanted to give it a try. Aughtmon is a mother of 3 and a Pastors wife. This book is a faith based book and each paged is about finding Jesus with in you, and learning how to live in Jesus's name.

I find my self to be a religious person but the style of writing did not appeal to me. The book focused on the idea of a woman being a "supergirl" and the idea of battling "villains" through the word of the bible. I think that the message of being able to live and love through stories int the bible is great. There are a lot of people who do not believe in the bible or Jesus. However- reading this book made me roll my eyes as the author talked about "Miss you deserve it", "Mr. Substitution", "The Diva", "the Judge" and more.

I did get a lot from the book, and it made me think about some aspects of my daily life. I just had trouble with the the light hearted names with in the book. I think I would still recommend this book for someone looking for some inspiration.

Mockingjay

This is the third book in the trilogy of Hunger Games. You can read the reviews on the first two books here and here. I must start off by saying that this book was a let down for me. I found it tough to get through, unlike the previous book which I flew through and could not wait to read what was next.
In Mockingjay we saw Katniss as a broken and disturbed girl. The relationships around her were stressed. We learn more about Gale and how much different he is then what was first shown in Catching Fire. Peeta is not in most of the book. When he does come back it is as another Mutt from the capital and totally different from the previous books.
We learn at the end that Katniss and Peeta do have a happily ever after. That is given to the reader in a rushed epilogue. I was disappointed there wasn't more growth of characters. Instead it is a book centered around anger and a war. I liked the book, but feel like the ending was rushed and very choppy.

Nantucket Nights

This is the third book from Hilderbrand that I have read and this book was not nearly as well written as the previous two that I have read and reviewed previously.
Nantucket Nights once again centers around well off women on the island of Nantucket. The 3 main characters (known as the Night Swimmers), go for their annual swim and one goes missing. There in starts the 'murder mystery'. Unlike Castaways or Barefoot by Hilderbrand the plot and character development was rushed and the ending was absurd.
Not a book that I would suggest. However I do think Hilderbrand is (in general) a great Author. Take the books for what they are; great summer reads.

I read 'Barefoot" by Hilderbrand a month ago and was eager to read another book by this author. Castaways was another well written book. This time the focus is on a group of married friends and what happens when one couple suddenly dies.
Infidelity, lies and truths come out through the voice of each character. I loved the style of writing. It was easy to read and hear the point of view of each character telling their story. The book made me question the friendships that were in the book. It makes the reader take a real close look at what a marriage means to an individual couple, as well as friendships with other couples. I think that there are characters in the book that are easily to relate to one's own lives. Some of those characters in this book were, the wealthier friends, the mother-like figure, the goody two shoes, and the partier.
This is a great summer read! I loved it and think it is worth picking up for anyone who has a close group of friends.

Eat, Pray, Love

I read this book a few years ago, but my Book Club picked it for this month. I did not like it the first time, and I didn't like it again. I thought I would give it a second chance and start fresh. I could not get into it and it just annoyed me to no end.
I think the idea of a woman who took a self indulgent year off to travel whines way too much. I think the book is interesting, however I found many phrases repeated. I think many women who have gone through a divorce would love some time off and travel. But I think for this to be a 'true' story there are too many lucky breaks and coincidences in it. I feel like Liz's marriage to her husband was 'the next step', she made a bad choice getting married and knew it. Her husband had his heart broken and wanted ALL of the money they had. I can understand her wanting out, but I can understand his wanting the money.
Liz herself says that she is taking a year off from men. Then ends the book in a relationship. It seems to me that the author doesn't like to be alone.
The best part of the book for me was Italy. Liz's description of Loneliness and Depression was great. Her time in the Ashram was repetitive but it was interesting to an extent. I wouldn't say that I would not recommend the book, but it would not be something I would be suggesting people read.

The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud

This was a quick read. I was really into the story of Charlie right from the start. I loved the layout of the book as well as the 'twist' that is involved. This book reminded me a tiny bit of the movie "The 6th Sense". Although this book focused on an accident and death it was not a dark story. It was hopeful and well written. I enjoyed Sherwood's character development and attention to detail.
I read this book because I heard about it when the movie was released. I am hesitant to see the movie, being that I did like the book so much. I almost feel like the book was too brief, however when I sat back and thought about it- it is just the right about of information. The book didn't drag out the plot and hit you with ideas that really make you think about later on. It was an easy read, and worth picking up.

Amagansett

This book satisfied my inner 'geek'. Being from Long Island, I loved all the references to locations and history. The story is mainly based on the East End and gives a lot of insight to the historic past of the island.
Mills crafted a beautifully written story that focuses around the death of a beautiful young woman and the Fisherman that finds her body. I loved the back history given to all the characters and how they came to the East End. The book shows us the rivalry between locals and City people who come to the area.
This book read like it was a movie. I could see the scenes coming to life by the careful way that Mills wrote the story. It was a great read

The Great Gatsby

A lot of people read The Great Gatsby in High School. I did not. I wanted to read it because many people have told me it is an interesting book, and I wanted to know what the "fuss" was about.
The story of Jay Gatsby is tragic to say the least. I found his desire to have people around sad, after you learn that he was just a man in love who could not have what he wanted. Daisy and her husband, Tom are some of the worst kind of people you could know. Unfortunate for Gatsby he loved Daisy. Gatsby's closest real friend Nick (whom the story is narrated by) tried to be open minded of all involved and believed that there was something worth while in everyone. Nick wanted to make money and live a good life. He wasn't looking to hurt anyone and was truly sad for Gatsby at the end of the book.
The story told in this book seems rather tame compared to the world we live in today and the way that stories are portrayed in the news and literature. I liked this book. I could see myself reading it again.

This book was a pick for my Book Club, but I wanted to read it on my own also.
The book had me sobbing at one point and laughing at another. Green revolved the book around 2 sisters and their family. Callie is married and living in a nice house with her husband and 2 kids. Steffi is a girl on the move, who is unsure of where life is taking her. These sisters have a beautiful relationship despite their differences.
In the book one sister becomes very sick and we see how her family and friends pull together for each other. The book touches on what marriage is to different people and what would you do if illness came to your family.
I really enjoyed the book. I think that some parts were a bit predictable. However it is a fun read and really touching. I enjoyed this book a lot and would recommend it to other people.

Barefoot

This was a chick lit summer read and it was good. I would say that since this is the first book by Hilderbrand, that I will be reading another.
The story revolves around the island of Nantuket in the summer time. It starts off with 3 secrets that the main characters- all women, are hiding. Each character's 'voice' is heard in the book. Then into the mix is a young man who also gets insight into their world. I did have a few laughs and I did cry at one point. The characters felt authentic.
I found the book to be very detailed and interesting. I think that Hilderbrand really did a great job of telling their stories in their words. It felt almost like it could have been different authors. This is not a short book at over 400 pages, but it was a quick read. I would recommend this!

As I have stated before I did not like the first book in this series. The second, I found to be better. This one I loved!
This story brings us away from Sookie and Bill and more into the life of Sookie trying to get to Bill. Bill is off and doing some 'business' out of town and he gets into some trouble. Eric seems to be a bigger part of Sookie's life in this book, as well as a new character Alcide.
The story is great and it was nice to see some new characters and story line. I think that this book is a quick read and very entertaining.

I tried to get into this book, I really did! However after 45 pages and me not wanting to read one more- I gave up.
I don't like to put down a book after I start it. Especially if I have no intention of ever reading it again. I feel like I should just make myself finish it. But, this time it was not happening. I am not sure if it is because I have not read the original "Pride and Prejudice" that I could not get into this book. Either way. It was not for me!

The Help

What an amazing book! I loved this story as well as all the characters. Stockett did a great job of telling this story through many voices.
I felt like the story ended abruptly. The story made me want to learn more. I read this book for my book club and we all agreed it would be amazing to hear the story through the children that are represented in the book. Aibileen and Minny are two of the maids, who tell the story of this book. They show how different life is for a "Niggra" maid compared to Skeeter the young white woman that wants to write about their lives.
The book has a lot great historical references of the times. I loved these books and it was really a wonderful read.

Best Friends Forever

This was a fun light read. It had some really funny parts, and some sad insight into the social working of High Schools friendships through adulthood.
This book touched on the dynamic of a family and what it means to be a friend. I loved the character Addie. She was a fighter and didn't know it. She bounced back from a few awful situations in her life. Her friendship with Valerie was so important through out her childhood to high school; Addie was crushed when it 'ended'.
There were a few unnecessary characters in the book, but it was interesting to see 'where are they now' in their High School class.

Have a Little Faith

This book took me a month to read, but it was only 250 pages. I struggled to read it and I analyze it. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it! However, it makes the reader really reach with in to see what their faith entails. Mitch Albom showed 2 completely different congregations and faiths and how it is all intertwined. Some congregations are small some are large but they are all special in their own way. They all believe in a higher being, who wants them to see the good in people and do wonderful things for the world they live in.
I was touched by the stories of the 2 “Rebs” and cried at the end. I really think this is a great book for anyone of any Faith. This true story will make you think about your own faith and purpose and if you are doing what’s best for the world that you live in.

Every now and again, I like romantic, tear-jerker books. This book was a great read for that category. This is the second book I have read by Nicholas Sparks. I have heard great things about his work from one of my really good friends, but haven't really gotten into his work.
This book was recently made into a movie which is why I really picked it up. I wanted to read it, before I saw the movie adaptation. The book focuses on love story across the miles between a solider overseas and a young woman in college. We learn that these characters John and Savannah have only been physically in the same place a handful of times but they fell deep in love and wanted to make it work. John who is a solider overseas before the events of 9/11 decides to re-enlist which puts more of a strain on their relationship. We learn a lot about the workings of two completely different people and their families.
I found parts of the book predictable, but very enjoyable. It was a story that I really liked and would recommend. Sparks really has a gift for words and wrote a beautiful story.

This was not as good as I hoped, or expected.
The book was VERY predictable. The characters had a lot of potential but they fell short of making me interested in their lives. I think that Green tried to cram too many story lines into one book, where this could have been 2 distinct stories.
This book follows a newly divorced woman who is trying to navigate living as a single mom in a ritzy beach town. We meet quirky neighbors, a yoga studio owner, owners of a hot restaurant in town, a couple whom she is friends with that might lose it all due to the economy, a hot novel writer, her ex-husband... the list goes on and on. The main character finds out about family members she didn't know she has. It is all too much for one book.
I think I might have enjoyed it, if I was looking for a book to read on a vacation. It was not the best book I have read by Green, but I do plan on reading more of her work.

Brava, Valentine

I have read I believe 6 (or more) of Adriana Trigiani's books. I have once again fallen in love with her story of an Italian - American Family. This book is the second of the series. The first book was Very Valentine. You can read more about that book here - http://kimsbookblog614.blogspot.com/2009/02/very-valentine.html. The character of Valentine finds herself having to deal with now being the head of the family business and finding a way to work with her brother who is almost her complete opposite.

Brava, Valentine starts off in Italy and crosses back to the United States and then to another old world country. We see Valentine take the reins of the company and really make some great things happen in her own life, along with growing as a person.

I love the aspects of friends and family in this book. It shows that the relationships may not always be good, but family is family and will always be there for you.

Trigiani knows how to describe in beautiful details the characters and places in her books that you feel that you are a part of them. I love this book and would highly recommend reading both Very Valentine and Brava, Valentine. There will be a third book in this series coming out, hopefully next February.

Commencement

I enjoyed this book. For the most part it was an interesting read. I did find parts of the book to be predictable. The four main characters had very distinct personalities and were well defined by Sullivan. As the book was narrated by these characters you could see the care that was put into the writing. All of the emotions with in the characters and friendship were well placed, and made the story more appealing and real for me.

I think that the friendship between the girls was very true to the author. Sullivan showed the ups and downs of the friendship and how it can endure through many trials. Being that I personally have three best girlfriends could be why I found parts of the book predictable. One line that I found in the book really hit home for me, "But what had once seemed like genuine care and concern had now turned ugly- they could not stop judging, comparing".

I was a little disappointed with the end of the book. I would have like to seen it go in a different direction then how it ended. The ending seemed wrong in comparison to the character's life with in the book.

Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone

It seems like I should have read these books already, but nope I started this month!

I have only read Book 1 of Harry Potter thus far and I loved it. It was a quick and entertaining read. I can understand why so many people love the books as well as the movies ( I have not seen the movies either). This book almost feels like it is in it's own language. Understand spells, characters and also the world of Wizards / Witches versus Muggles came very quickly to me.

This was a fun read and I can not wait to read the rest of the series.

Home To Big Stone Gap

There isn't much more praise I can give then to say that I would want to live in Ave Marie's world. Home to Big Stone Gap, is the last in the series by Adriana Trigiani. These books are so well written that you want to fall into place with in the characters lives and places that are visited.

There were parts of the story and information that was given that made me unsure of where the story was heading. Then I realized it was the pure development of these characters lives and the Blue Ridge Mountain world. This book felt as if it was written differently then the previous books, however the characters and story lines have changed with the years. In this book we learn more about the people who are closet friends of Ave Marie's, including Fleeta, Theodore and Iva Lou. We also learn what marriage for two people is like after more than 20 years. I t was nice to see the growth and love still developing between Jack and Ave Marie.

I have enjoyed the entire series. All of these books are worth reading and will take you to somewhere you might have never been, like Cracker's Nest.

Catching Fire

I truly have enjoyed this book as much, if not more than the first one in the series. Catching Fire is the second book in the Hunger Games series by Suzzane Collins.

The first book I read back in July as a pick for Book Club. This time around, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. Collins picks right up where the last book ended. This time around we get to see more of Katniss and Peeta's relationship develop as most of their worlds crumble around them. With speculation of an uprising in the other districts and the Government becoming even more controlling, Katniss and Peeta are sent back into the Hunger Games.

I found the story well written and easy to read. It was interesting and still edgy. I think that this is a great read, even though it is meant as Young Adult literature.

The Beach House

This is a great summer time beach read!

The story had depth, but easy to follow. I enjoy the multiple character and story that this book has. You learn about a lot of characters with important information, not just a bunch of fluff. I feel that Green was able to give all the readers someone that they can share their point of view with. I did not especially hate the plot twist, and I did find it a bit predictable. I would not fault the author for this, being that it is a light summer read. The description on Nantucket and the world that Nan lives in, is beautifully described. I could see all the scene's play out in my mind perfectly. The character of Nan is just perfectly written and someone who I wish would invite me for Tea or Martini's. I really would recommend this book for a light read. The reader comes away with a great out look on the future for these characters.

What a fantastic book! This is truly the best of the series so far!

This book is spread over a number of years and shows the main characters developing and learning more about themselves and others. Ave Marie's daughter Etta is a main focus of this book. We learn so much about the mother daughter relationship. We see how important the role of each of her parents play. Adriana Trigiani takes the readers on another trip through Italy. We read about the family and their surroundings. Also the times have changed in Big Stone Gap. There is a lot going on in the lives of the characters in BSG. I really have loved this entire series and think it is beautifully written. There are many things in the series I have related to and can appreciate the details that Trigiani has give the reader in these stories. A must read!

Welcome to Shirley...

Being that I lived very close (walking distance) to BNL, I found this book very relevant and well written.
McMasters explains a lot about the lab, what is done behind the thick walls and forest. I have family members who have worked there for over 20 years. Hearing her stories from her neighbors and family is very enlightening. McMasters does cut into BNL and their practices a lot. However being from the area- I believe it is more than justified or fair. Although the book is full of numbers, and scientific facts, I enjoyed the book. The author adds personal history of the founders of the town and also her own family. It was very interesting.
Anyone from the area would like the quirks of the small towns that surround the lab. I would recommend this book to someone who is looking for a story about a home town.

I'm So Happy For You

So glad to be done reading this book.

It was a quick read, but not a GOOD read. It was melodramatic and just not the kind of "chick lit" that I have enjoyed in the past. The story was ok. I mean there are a lot of women out there with 'friend-enemies". However this plot was just too much. I found it to be predictable and boring. It is not something I would recommend. I read this for a light summer read for book club.

Such A Pretty Fat

I feel like finally a book has been written that explains what it is like to LIKE yourself.. but maybe not the way people expect you to.
This book made me laugh out loud on multiple occasions. Jen's trials with her size an self worth are right on target for me. I think that it took a while for the book to hit on losing the weight, however when it did.. it was a quick page turner for me. I wasn't fond of the footnotes. I tend to read them first when I would turn the page. However they were funny in some instances. This is the first book I have read by Lancaster and I plan to read some more of her work.

Chocolat

This was one of the strange times where I have seen the movie before I read the book. I liked the movie, yet I loved the book. I think the author, Harris, really caught me up in the 'voices' of each character.
This is the story about an outsider moving into a small town in France. The locals are curious however the town Priest is not happy about her arrival. The Priest seems to be trying (in vain) to get his parishioners to like him and come back to god. He views the woman and her child as sinners and possibly a witch. He believes that unless she is run out of town, the town will be come tarnished and indulge in immoral acts.
Vianne is a strong single mother. She is a business woman as well as a friend. The way that she is described and narrates her story through out the book you really get a sense of who she is as a person. In many ways she becomes a friend to the villagers and to the people passing through the town.
I think that the story is a quick read. I am glad I read the book after the movie. The movie is different from the book, yet both are a fun and fast story.

Big Cherry Holler

We are back in the Mountains with Ave and Jack. This story takes place 8 years from the end of the last story (Big Stone Gap).

We learn even more about Ave, Jack, their families and how their marriage works and what is holding them back from happiness. This story really develops Ave into an adult woman who still has not completely 'found herself'. We learn about the dynamic of a family that is wounded and still struggling to be living in the present.

Once again the readers get to go on a journey with Ave to Italy. The way that the author, Adriana Trigiani, describes these different area's really take you deep into the countryside of Italy as well as the Mountains that Ave grew up in.

I love these books. I am a big fan of Adriana Trigiani and really appreciate her story telling abilities!

Hunger Games

I found this story to be a quick read and very disturbing at the same time.

This book is about the country of Panem, which is the former United States of America. In the 12 districts that make up Panem, every year 2 children between 12-18 years old are sent to fight for their lives in the arena known as Hunger Games. Who ever makes it to the end.. after all the other 23 kids have been killed is the winner.

This 'game' is to remind the districts that the Government is in control and can take away anything they want to. The Game, which includes children murdering each other as well as other disturbing events is shown across Panem for the districts to view.

Katniss is the main character in the story and is the District 12 female tribute for the games. She is clever and rough around the edges. The stories that are shared about her childhood through the games really give you insight into the world to which she lives in.

I liked the book. I know there is a second book after this one revolving around the same story and I plan on reading that one too. This was a selection for one of my book clubs and I would not have read it other wise. I am glad that I did.

Living Dead in Dallas

I think after reading the first book in this series, and HATING it, I am pleased that this one flew by!I read Dead Until Dark and then watched season 1 of True Blood. I really liked the show and the book wasn't to bad after that. In this book Sookie is loan out for use of her abilities. She gets out of her small town life and takes on Dallas, Texas. She is very naive compared to the characters that she meets.I found this book to be much more interesting then the first. I am still not a fan of the writing style. I feel that it jumps around a lot and things have to be re-read (as if I missed a paragraph).

I was highly reluctant to read this book. This was chosen as a Book Club selection. I thought that I had no interest in the world of a Geisha or Japan, with in 50 pages I was hooked!

I was quickly entertained and interested in the life of these Geisha. I had no idea of what being a Geisha involved. Although this book is not 100% accurate to what a Geisha would do or go through, I have learned a lot from it.The details of their daily lives and the struggles during the war were very interesting. I was very happy with the style of writing and the way that the story was told. You learned about a girl through most of her life until adulthood. Sayuri is faced with many challenges from when she lived in her crooked house with her family, till she made her way to New York.

This book was great! I know I will recommend it to my family and friends. I read it with in a few days and was shocked on how much I really did enjoy it.

The Time Traveler's Wife

This book was not like any of books I have read before. I was confused by the dates and ages through out the book. However it was a story that makes you wonder about love and what life means to you. I was undecided if the main character, Claire was smart or a fool. We learn so much about her and her life through out the story. I wanted her to act out more or change her path.

It set the question in my head of what would you do now, if you knew what your future would become. There is a span of years in this book that reached from the late 70's to present day.

Henry, the other main character is sometimes sweet and polite, then switches to some one who is mean and angry. We see a man who has trouble understanding himself and the world around him. His only constant is Claire.

My Sister's Keeper

I can honestly say this book was heart breaking. Picoult seems to really understand how a family works and thrives off of each other. I did not know what to expect next. I love the view points from all the character's involved in the book. I was trying to read this before I saw the movie, and I have accomplished that. I wasn't expecting to use so many tissues reading this book. Although it is not a 'light read' because of the material, it is an interesting and dynamic book.

I can not say I was thrilled with the ending. However there are so many ways that you could end this book. I think that, that is what makes this book so interesting.

This book is a great light summer read. I found it to be a bit predictable, however there is a few surprises along the way. The character JJ is very self conscious and unsure of her place in not only her home and office, but in her skin too. She battles with her relationship with dieting and with food. I wasn't to please with the story line making the character change so much for a man she meets via the Internet. It was fun to see the idea of the beginning of the Internet and how people were getting used to the new 'fad'.

Big Stone Gap

This book is much different and also very similar to the other books that I have read by Trigiani. There are many classic elements of an Italian up bringing which I personally LOVE in her work.

Ave Maria is the main character in this book that has developed into a series of books. Ave Maria is considered to be a town spinster as she is in her mid thirties and un-wed in a small Virginia town in the 70's.

The book explores what it means to actually find yourself through pieces of your family that you never understood, or even knew about. It touches on the emotions of a woman and how she is perceived for expressing and doing as she pleases. The characters portrayed in the story from the Blue Ridge mountains in this small town are very interesting.

I really enjoyed this book. I am looking forward to finishing the series. There is a movie currently being adapted from this book.

The Secret

I think that everyone has heard about this book. It was made into a TV special and has been published in many languages.
I have read this book at least 4 times and also have it on my Ipod. It is about positive thinking and also the idea of the universe connecting you to what you are looking for in your life. The book focuses on thinking and achieving. The Secret also believes in the Law of Attraction. It is about having images of what you want in your mind and putting it into the universe with positive thoughts as if you have already achieved it.
It is a great book. People either love or hate it and I love it. I have written notes all through mine and think that it is fantastic. It immediately makes me change my thinking and be more positive and brings me a lot of happiness.

I read this book rather quickly. It wasn't an easy read due to the content of the material. This was the first Jodi Picoult book that I have read. I loved the story line. Unfortunately it is very reminiscent of the story of what happen at Columbine High School.

The book revolves around a High School shooting in a small town. It gives you the point of view of many people in that town. From parents of a child who has died as a result of the shooting, to the Judge of the trial who's daughter survived the shooting. The parents of the shooter are very realistic and well written. They are heart broken for their family as well as their town.

I found the story to some what predictable, however I would have never guessed the ending. I think it is a great read.

Book Club selection for May 2009

I heard from a lot of people about how great this book was and I would love it. I took that with a grain of salt. I must say for being a book about a Circus, this really captivated my attention.
The idea of growing old in a Nursing Home and remembering your life really can hit home for almost anyone. Having my husbands grandfather currently in one, and my great grandmother who passed away years ago living in one of these homes, I was thinking about what goes (went) on in their minds. I loved the fact that the nurses in the home weren't perfect, but there is always one who really is a Gem.
It is rare to see such a prospective about a Circus. There are people that you love for their 'glamour' in being performers, and others that are just awful human beings. The animals are given characteristic qualities and become part of the book.
I really did like this book. I was impressed with the way the story was told. For a book with a lot of heart ache- It made me smile and appreciate the story more.

Dead Until Dark

I really did not like anything about this book. The writting is sloppy. The story feels like it is a few vampire books rolled into one. I am most likely going to give the next one in the series a shot. I heard that the show that is on HBO is really good.

I think reading Twilight first really spoiled it for me. To me those were so much better! I think maybe reading 5 vampire books in a row, could have made me not like this book.

A December Wedding

I read this book back in May 2007. This is the kind of book that makes you think about the choices that you are making now, that you have made in the past and how it will all wrap up into your future. It also shows the importance or non importance the state of marriage is to different couples.
It is roughly about a wedding for a couple that were high school sweet hearts back in the late 70's. They were recently re-united and are dealing with an illness. They invite a group of their friends up for their wedding, which held in shortly after the events of 9/11.
The book focuses on each persons accounts of who they were back in high school versus now 27 years later, not that they are in their 40's. They also look back at events that changed their lives back in their Senior year of High School.
This book was complex and interesting.

Plain Truth

I was taken deep into this one.
I think it is because I can remember going to the Amish parts of Pennsylvania, and not understand as a kid, why these people were so different. This story explains why they believe what they do, and what is the family dynamic really like in an Amish Home.
It was sad to know that a young woman in this kind of town would go through so much to hide a baby. Also it was a contrast to see the "city slicker" lawyer who thought she knew it all, but was able to get to know and become part of the family. The book touched on the idea of forgiveness in their community versus in the courtroom. It showed also that the Elders of the community have a strong hand in every one's daily actions.
I enjoyed this book immensely. I didn't know what was the truth and who was "to blame" but it was a very interesting and well written and descriptive book.

The Pact

I feel like The Pact was similar to 19 Minutes, which I loved. It is hard to imagine living in a jail for 7 months as an 18 year old, with your life in someone elses hands.
However Emily and Chris, held each others lives in their hands. Is it possible to love someone so much that you become part of them and them part of you.. yes I think so. However, where do you draw the line? I find the idea of offering up the gun for someone else to take their life gut wrenching and sad. I do not think that I could have ever done that.
Picoult's writing is beautiful. The pages fly by, and the story is engrossing. There are so many things I liked about this book, the bond between two families, the relationship between Chris and Emily, from childhood to their late teens. I was surprised by the truth. I was expecting something different. I think that the events that lead to Emily wanting to take her own life could have been avoided. I don't know if I can agree with the role that Chris played in her life, as well as death.

The Red Tent

I read this as the second choice for book club. I was highly skeptical at first about this book, then I was quickly wrapped up in the story. This story is taken from a quick blurb in bible, about the daughter of Jacob. It starts before Dinah's birth and takes you on the journey of her entire life.
The book talks about the relationships between families and what ties one person to another, and how connections are made. It had so many layers to it that it is hard to explain in a review. I was wrapped into the story of a girl growing among women.
There are graphic and sad accounts of peoples lives through out this book also. I cried a few times through out reading. It gives you insight into the roles of women and men in one period of time, but how they differ in different regions. I also enjoyed how it played into the relationship between women, and how they view each other.
At first I had trouble remember the intricate relationships of the characters and found myself looking at the family 'tree' in the front of the book. But with in the first 100 pages, I understood all their importance in Dinah's life.

Re-visiting "The Virgin Blue"

After meeting and discussing "The Virgin Blue" with the women in the book club, there were elements of the story that really changed for me. Although I think my feelings on this book are still the same- I was able to gain some new insight to the story.
We discussed what happen to Isabelle- did she die, was she murdered, or did she just leave her husband a family? It seemed to me she was murdered. In the novel the last thing that is written from her point of view was that she discovered the new Hearth and then "everything went black".
Was Ella's affair acceptable being how she was treated and the lack of love from her husband. Also the similarities of the husbands and their role in Isabelle and Ella's lives. There was discussion of the view of the mid-wives and paganism.

I gained a lot more understanding of every ones roles in the story. I still feel that their was a lot of jumping around and it was hard to understand how much time past in the characters lives.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was a book that was chosen for an online book club that I have joined. This book was almost abandoned be me a few times. I wasn't getting sucked into the story about this poor family and their hardships. However when I mentioned to a few people that I was reading it, they all told me it was one of their all time favorites. I can not say that I feel the same. I was happy to done with the book and although I did find a couple of laughs and tears in the book, it is not something I would pick up and read again.
The women in the book are all very different and yet the same. They are doing all they can to help get their families by. I think that it is a good book, and written beautifully, however, it just wasn't something I could say was a favorite.

The Virgin Blue

This book I read for the first book club I have ever joined. We are meeting later this month to discuss the book.

I can not say I loved it. I would have never chosen it on my own. The book flips back and forth between present time and the 1500's. It takes place in Europe during the religious wars. There was a lot of French through out the book and to me, the story seemed to be all over the place. I found the story interesting. I think I like the historical parts of the book better than the more current parts of the story line.

Lucia, Lucia

I loved love loved this book! What a beautiful tale of Lucia a woman growing up in Greenwich Village in a big Italian Family in the 1950's. If there has ever been a book that made me want to be in another time period,, this one is it.
Adriana Trigiani had me laughing and crying through out this story. The main character Lucia is a smart and successful girl for her age. She believes in herself and is highly independent. I felt that I could relate to her character and to her views on life, love, children and marriage.
I read this book because when I ready Very Valentine, by the same author there is mention of a movie being made about Lucia. I am so glad that I did read it. I can't help but think about the characters in Mrs. Trigiani's books, they are so beautifully developed.

This is my Friday night, and I love it. I am drinking wine, and reading. Roxy is sleeping on my lap. I have 3 books that I would like to read for March, so I am starting today. Those books are "Lucia, Lucia", "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and "Virgin Blue". The last 2 are for the online and regular Book Clubs that I have joined.

Into The Wild

I picked this book up, because there was a movie adapted from the story and I wanted to see the film. I read this in October 2007.

This was an intresting Biography of a young man from the early 90's who wanted to abandon all the current ways of living of the times and go to be one and live on his own in the Alaskan wild. It is told though the eyes of people who met him while he made his way from Virgina to Alaska as well as members of his family. It also has entries from books he made notes in and journal entries from this young man.

One of the last entries that are documented in his writing is "Happiness is to Share".

Lipstick Jungle

Just wanted to leave a tid bit about Candace Bushnell's novel "Lipstick Jungle".
This is the same author that has fame from Sex in the City, Trading up and 4 Blondes.

This story takes you through the lives of 3 very successful women that live in NYC. They have been friends since before any of them found success. Their personal lives, goals, careers, and families is what connects them in so many ways. The novel is interesting, touches on what each women values, weather it be money, love, children, moving up in their career, or friendship to each other.

This was for me a fun kick off to summer reading in 2007 for me. I liked this book and thought it was creative of having the view of each character through her best friends eyes. It does show that not everything is as it seems in a person's life. I know that it is now a TV show, but i have not seen any episodes.

Very Valentine

I think that I have found another favorite author! Adriana Trigiani's Very Valentine is a very intresting and descriptive book.
I had very heard of Trigiani till her appearance on The Today show, where she was talking about the book. I found her funny and really engaging. I then saw that she was going to be at my local Barnes & Nobles in March so I picked it up right away.
I found myself relating to the main characters desire to create something beautiful and seeing the beauty in all things. I think some of it was over board with the amout of adjectives that were used at first and then I really came to appreciate the style of writting.
This book solidified my desire to go out and explore other countries! I felt like I was in Italy with the characters and could see and hear what they felt.
Excellent book!!!

Summer Sisters

In August 2008 I read Summer Sisters by Judy Blum. It was reccomended on the LIW boards so I figured I would read it for some summer fun. I thought it would be more light summer reading, than a story about how fun yet hard and complicated friendship can be.
It was not a bad book. It was not what I was thinking it was going to be. It was brought together nicely as a story. I felt like through the entire thing I was picking favorites for which character I liked the best. Still I am not sure which friend was right or wrong. It made me think a lot too on who is ready or willing to be a parent also. It also made me think about, does your past really affect your future, or can you change that, for better or worse?

Twilight Saga

These books were read in between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2008.

I liked book 1- Twilight I don't think that it is the best book that I have ever read. I think that because it is geared to a crowd in their late teens, some of it was a bit bland. Where as if the set was geared to an older crowd it might have been a bit more 'interesting'. The author was able to make me want to know more about these characters and their lives as vampires and possible wolves.

The second book in the series titled New Moon is better than Twilight, in my opinion.
I think as a whole it is a great source of entertainment. I think Twilight did a good job of setting up the series. However New Moon was excellent. I couldn't decide who I liked better, Jacob or Edward. The character development was great. There was so much action and twist in this book, that it really kept my attention much more than Twilight did.

Eclipse is book 3. I can't believe how wrapped up I am in this series. I couldn't wait to finish it! It was a page turner like the 2 before this one.. but it seriously captures you into the story. There are so many more characters and developements in this book. I found that so far in as the books progress the writing is better.

Breaking Dawn is the final book (for now) in this series. I never thought I would be able to get through all 750 pages of this book so quickly! I loved how it was told through different characters in the story. I was surprised by some of the twist, but I was disappointed by some of the peices of the story I felt were missing. However I think they were omitted because of the age group the story is geared to. Then again that is what your imagination is for.

The whole series is great! I would reccomend it to someone looking for a fun series to read.

The Last Lecture

All I can say is thank you, to my friend for reccomending this book to me. I read it pretty quickly and it made me laugh and cry. There must be a calming yet uncertainty knowing you are dying and that you can only do so much. But with out limiting your life you can live your dreams and leave a beautiful legacy.

This book really made me relax and come to the realization that people do die, young and old. However what they leave behind are memories that are a gift. I also learned that the more I document my life the more it could be helpful to my family, friends, sisters, parents and my husband.

I decided after seeing some other people's book list, that I too, should have one. There is a lot of books that I have read over the years. Lately I have been reading more. However when asked what I have read, occassionaly I do forget. I want to chronical what I do like and do not. I can name some reccomendations that I receive from other readers on this blog.
Soon I will update books I have read in the past with what information I have on them.
